Sony (the Sony Corporation) is multinational conglomerate founded and still based in Japan. Its business interests are primarily based in the electronic, gaming and entertainment industries. They are one of the leading manufacturers of electronic products and content with companies including Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Mobile Communications. They have often been at the forefront of technological development for example with the Compact Disc in the 70s and 80s and in the early 90s they became one of the market leaders in the video games market with the first in the line of their hugely Popular PlayStation Consoles. Continuing to be one of the market leaders with the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Unlike the companies that had previously dominated the market Sony lacked a mascot figure (Sega had Sonic and Nintendo had Mario), in part this helped Sony position itself as the more adult console thus attracting a new audience who were also drawn in by the PlayStation 2 adoption of the DVD drive, which made it a viable home entertainment system in its own right. One character who became synonymous the PlayStation was Lara Croft, a far cry away from the cuddly mascots of Nintendo and Sega.
