About the Nintendo Wii:

In 2006 Nintendo launched the Wii, it was one of the seventh generation video games consoles and brought video games to a wider market by intentionally targeting a broader demographic with innovative approaches to gameplay. This approach resulted in the Wii being market leader for this generation of consoles (as of the first quarter of 2012) with sales outstripping both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in worldwide sales.

One of the main innovations with the Wii was the introduction of the Wii Remote controller, which detects motion across three dimensions It uses a combination of built-in accelerometers and infrared detection to sense its position. This way of playing using the space around you and the remote to create motions on the screen encouraged young and old to play, the game play is intuitive and attracts people who are the normally video gaming demographic. It has been reported in the UK that pensioners as old as 103 have been playing the Wii and another report states that Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom has used the console. This all-inclusive approach to this new generation of gaming be summarised by one of the slogans used by Nintendo at the time "Wii would like to play".

The Wii received third party support from companies such as Sega, Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Capcom, Square Enix, Ubisoft and many more. More games have been developed for the Wii than either the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3. As of 31 March 2014 895.22 million Wii games have been sold worldwide.  New games developed for the Wii included games from popular franchises such as The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario and Pokémon.

Wii also incorporated the Virtual Console service, which allowed console owners to play various classic arcade and platform games from system such as Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Nintendo 64 (N64), Sega Mega Drive (Genesis), Sega Master System and Commodore 64, amongst others. These games are available from the Wii Shop Channel over an internet connection.
